Port-au-Prince, March 29, 2012
After a
night of heavy rain, thunder and lightning, Friday March 30 opened to bright
sunshine as if the weather knew the significance of the day and the event that
was to take place. Over 120 union members, well-wishers and guests gathered at
#313 Rue Joseph Janvier to witness and celebrate the official opening of the
new CTSP offices.
As they were
ushered to their seats in front of the new offices, PSI members and observers
attending the Inter-American regional executive meetings witnessed and felt the
warm welcome, pride and joy of CTSP’s members. In an elegant ceremony, PSI’s affiliates, and representatives from
government and other employers paid tribute to the CTSP and its work in
promoting public services. “We are standing here in front of a very visible
result of international solidarity,” said PSI’s general secretary, Peter
Waldorff. “And I want to thank all PSI affiliates who responded to the call for
donations to help the victims of the earthquake.”
With the leadership
of Canadian affiliates and the skills of a Haitian engineer and other Haitian
workers, the construction of the new offices started in mid-March 2011. The offices
comprises an entrance area, 5 offices and a conference room. Plans include the
establishment of an internet cafe especially targeted to members of the CTSP.
The compound
at Rue Joseph Janvier has always been a place where members and their families
and friends congregate. The new CTSP offices and the Workers’ Solidarity Clinic
are a true memorial and tribute to all those who have worked hard and who
continue to take action to improve the lives of their fellow Haitians.
