Global capitalism and the left

Here's an interesting and thought provoking article on global capitalism from New left Project.

Some interesting points. I particularly extracted three quotes which to me, are instructive (emphasis is my own).
I'm afraid that international solidarity among capitalist classes and capitalist state leaders is much stronger than the international solidarity of the 'proletariat' or the alter-globalisation movement. This elite solidarity is a consequence of the increasing international penetration of capital and the common material base that creates.

and

First, it means we have to rid ourselves of the illusion that you can change the world without taking power. It is utterly impossible to progress towards a better world unless the balance of social forces that are in conflict in any society find expression in the transformation—in terms of organisation as well as policies—of the states in those societies.
Relatedly, it means we have to move beyond a politics of protest. While tremendously energising and creative, street protest ought to feed into the creation of political organisation, which is aimed not simply at standing outside the state and throwing tomatoes at it, or having a punch-up with police, but at building the types of organisations which can go into the state and change its make-up.

and

So we do need to start thinking about how to build new political organisations. But I understand your generation's concern to avoid reproducing the old Communist or Social Democratic parties. That's going to depend on taking the creativity of the street protests and putting it to work in building organisations which are able to transcend those—quite undemocratic—models.

Working for the common good

Rosa Pavanelli, new PSI general secretary
"As the 29th World Congress of Public Services International drew to a close in Durban, South Africa, delegates celebrated that they had elected a woman to lead their global union federation for the first time in its 105 year history. PSI’s new General Secretary Rosa Pavanelli said, “I’m proud and honoured to carry the fight for social justice forward for PSI, our members and our communities.
“As public sector workers we have special responsibilities and the best opportunities to build alliances with members of civil society to deliver quality public services for the benefit of all,” she said.

“We must find new ways to build political strength. Focusing on collective bargaining rights is no longer enough. We must develop social unionism and reach out to new allies, in order to build a better world. But we must never forget that our strength and identity starts in our workplaces.  Supporting campaigning, advocacy, networking and organising in workplace sectors is key to increasing and representing our membership.”"

Reviewing the campaigning model

Over the last 10 years, trade unions have been using the campaigning model. But is there now campaign fatigue?

The article/post on Online Global Labour Campaigns explores what's happening.

What's your view on this?

What's the national or regional experience?

Trade Union Renewal and New Unionism

Here's an interesting, informative and thought-provoking web site called New Unionism.

"New unionism is about seeking creative ways to organize internationally to democratize work. Together, these four principles (organizing, internationalism, creativity and workplace democracy) unite us as a network of union activists"

You can also subscribe to the newsletter Work in Progress.

What do you think about the web site? Do you think it can help you as you think about trade union renewal?

Survey on union values

We are currently reviewing the survey results received so far. There are some interesting trends.

Here's a link to the survey that was done on a global level. I think you'll find it instructive.

Sis Asmara (ABVO Curacao) tells us that she'll be conducting a survey among members of ABVO. PSI Caribbean is anxious to see the results. All the best Sister!

Is anyone else interested in conducting the survey on a much wider scale in their union? Send us your comments and thoughts.

Exploring the Robin Hood Tax

"It is time that we embrace the concept of a financial transactions tax". This is the message from world leaders and civil society who met recently to discuss innovative financing for development.

PSI, along with other global unions, is a supporter of a financial transactions tax.

Day three in progress at PSI FES workshop in T&T

Paula Robinson, ILO Caribbean's senior specialist on workers' activities

Social Media and Trade unions

In today's working world, the rights of the workers still remain a paramount issue. It is still unfortunate that at a modern time like this the rights of the worker have not been truly recognized. With this reality, the unions have a major role to play in the workplace as it relates to workers' rights.

However while this is obvious of the role of the union, the union should not take for granted their role of representing the workers. Over the years, we have seen businesses go bankrupt for different reasons. But chief among these is usually the failure to adjust to new and developing times, ideals and changes. This could happen to the trade union movement if these changes are not taken into consideration.

Another great one passes

Just read this story. It is worth sharing. We must celebrate lives given in the service of people. We must also learn from those lives.

Rest in peace Brother.

Identifying the issues. Using the tools

So this is the snappy theme that I've come up with for this year's workshop.

What do you think?

Here's the draft programme.

Second workshop in Port of Spain

The NUGFW has kindly offered the use of its conference room for the second workshop. NUGFW's headquarters is located at 145-147 Henry Street, Port of Spain.

The 2 1/2 day workshop will be held from October 3rd to 5th.

Now putting thoughts together for the programme. So much to do, so little time.

In the last workshop we had to think about the environment in which we're operating - what I called the landscapes. And we had to start preparing ourselves - preparing the canvas.

Aims for 2nd workshop

In this year's workshop, participants will:

1.         Prepare to conduct small pieces of research
2.         Prepare trade union position papers on Caribbean development (priorities and models)
3.         Practise presenting arguments and proposals

With the blog up and running - sorta, we can really engage in conversation during and after this second workshop. We can only get better as we practise.

Still trying to come up with a snappy theme for the workshop. Hmmm.

Profile pic

Took a while to come up with a profile pic for this blog.

Not sure that the one chosen is the best one. I think it symbolises what we're trying to do.

What do you think?

Got any other ideas?

Still testing .... and stressing?

One of the biggest challenges is trying to do something new and at the same time trying to do it the best way possible.

Noble intentions. But after a while, one just has to let go and get something done. It's OK to make mistakes, take careful note, correct what you can, and move on stronger and hopefully better.

Got some useful comments from friends. Have made some changes.

Have decided to take a break from testing this blog.Birthday time coming up. Aint as young as I used to be.

Actually, I feel pretty good with what's been done so far.

It's just a mess!

Trying to understand the financial crisis, what caused it, why and who is involved just boggles the mind.

Here is a presentation prepared by Mark Langevin, PSI co-ordinator for North America . Mark is also responsible for building working relationships with the international financial institutions - especially the IMF and World Bank.

Mark delivered this presentation at the recently held regional executive meetings held in Port-au-Prince. The presentation provided the necessary background for discussions on PSI's strategic directions in the new congress period,  2013 - 2017.

In memory of those who have passed

Port-au-Prince, March 29, 2012

After a night of heavy rain, thunder and lightning, Friday March 30 opened to bright sunshine as if the weather knew the significance of the day and the event that was to take place. Over 120 union members, well-wishers and guests gathered at #313 Rue Joseph Janvier to witness and celebrate the official opening of the new CTSP offices.

CTSP young workers - making things happen

Port-au-Prince, March 31, 2012

Quite fittingly a group of eight young CTSP young members  was the first the meet in the recently opened new offices. Tifonie Powell, IA young workers’ representative on the PSI Executive Board met with a group of young workers from member unions of the CTSP. Over the past year, Tifonie and Marie Danielle Pierre-Charles, CTSP’s young workers’ coordinator, have been exchanging ideas on ways to integrate more young workers as well as find ways to reach out to young people across Haiti.

Sign up to the Quality Public Services Charter

If you haven't yet signed up, then PSI invites you to join the world-wide campaigns for quality public services, the foundation of both free and equal societies, and a strong, modern economy. The common good must not be undermined by the desire of a few to increase their profits. We work to influence international organisations to put people first. And in local communities, rank and file union members deliver the same message.

If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck .....

Calling something by another name may sound a like idea. But in many cases, it only ends up causing confusion.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, trade unionists brought to everyone's attention the negative impacts of unbridled ideologically driven privatisation. The campaign highlighted the definition and scope of privatisation to the point where policy makers no longer wanted to use the word.

So, in true fashion, they started using words and terms like Private-public partnerships, 3Ps, PPPs, rationalisation. At thge end of the day, one has to look very carefully at the structure, scope and reasoning behind the proposed action.

A narrow definition of privatisation
– A transfer of ownership from the state to private companies or individuals

A broad definition
– Transfer of state or public sector functions and responsibilities.

And an even broader definition
– It includes a range of measures otherwise termed commercialisation aimed at introducing more market-like methods, structures and cultures into public activities
